UPCOMING EVENTS FOR LENT

LENTEN SUNDAY SERMON SERIES

When you walk on the beach and the surf washes up and covers your feet, you are not quite in the ocean, but also not on dry land.

When you admire the sunset, it is not yet nighttime, but it is also no longer daytime.

When you are making a friend, there is often an “in-between time” where one goes from being a stranger to a good friend.

These are  threshold moments.

The ancient Celtic people had a profound understanding of the importance of thresholds. These are places where something new has begun, but has not yet come to its fruition.

Thresholds are a place where

true transformation is possible.

This Lenten season we will consider thresholds as places of transformation and new beginnings, as we make our way toward the cross of Good Friday, and the ultimate transformation and new life of Easter Sunday.

WEDNESDAYS DURING LENT

MIDDAY LENTEN WORSHIP & LUNCH

WEDNESDAYS, MARCH 12, 19, 26, APRIL 2, 9

11:30AM - LUNCH TO FOLLOW

Lent is always a good time to experiment with worship, and this year the Looking Within Center will host Wednesday Midday Prayer Around the Cross at 11:30 a.m. Have you ever felt like you’re in the middle of nowhere? Sometimes we retreat to the cabin. Sometimes we’re lost in the wilderness. Sometimes home is shifting under our feet and we can’t figure out where we are or where we’re headed. Come explore the middle of nowhere on Wednesday mornings this Lent.

Each week we’ll gather around the cross to pray, hear Scripture, contemplate images, consider a reflection, light candles, and savor reflective music (including Taize). Then, we’ll eat lunch together! Hosted by Julie Stevens, Hayden Kvamme, and Chris Roberts.

We will also have midday worship on Maundy Thursday (April 17)and Good Friday (April 18) at 11:30am in the Looking Within Center.

WATER’S EDGE DURING LENT

WEDNESDAYS, MARCH 12, 19, 26, APRIL 2, 9

6:30PM • Sanctuary

In 1985, Howard Jones dropped a song called, “No one is to blame”.

The first verse says, “You can look at the menu, but you just can’t eat. You can feel the cushions, but you can’t have a seat. You can dip your foot in the pool, but you can’t have a swim. You can feel the punishment, but you can’t commit the sin. No one, no one, no one ever is to blame.”

Occasionally, life seems impossible, and try as we might, we can’t see our way through it. When this happens, it’s easy to lose hope or give up trying; it’s easy to believe that nothing will ever change.

But as the saying goes,

God makes a way where there is no way.

Join us at Water’s Edge for our Lenten Series: “No way! Way.” where we will hear stories about how God finds a way in impossible situations. Sometimes we are invited to break down barriers, and create new approaches, and sometimes to just pause, listen, wait, and imagine a way where there is no way...

When we walk up to a doorway, almost anything can happen.

Sometimes the door has a “Welcome Mat” and we are met by the warmth of good friends.

Sometimes the door which had been open suddenly slams shut, and we are turned away.

Sometimes the door opens and we are invited into a whole new world filled with exciting possibilities.

Someone famous once said, “All beginnings are delightful; the threshold is the place to pause.” This year for the Three Days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil we will pause in the doorway that leads us through the old, old story of Jesus and his love, and continues into your life and something new.

Are you ready to experience what awaits you there in the Threshold?

MAUNDY THURSDAY - A WELCOME MAT

Thursday, April 17

IN-PERSON AT 7:00PM

Experience the “Welcome Mat” at the doorway as friends gather for a night of conversation, food, and connection. We will gather around tables filled with candles, bread, wine, juice, and friends. We’ll remember when Jesus gathered one last time with his people in a low lit room and reminded them to love one another. At the end of the night we’ll walk through the door and prepare for the next threshold when the worship experience continues on Friday night.

MAUNDY THURSDAY MIDDAY WORSHIP - 11:30 in the Looking Within Center

GOOD FRIDAY - A DOOR SLAM

Friday, April 18

IN-PERSON AT 7:00PM

Sometimes life can change in the blink of an eye, the snap of a finger, the ring of a phone, and the slamming of a door. Dreams that once seemed certain come to an end, and we are left wondering what comes next.

This night we encounter a place of endings and vulnerability. Even in the uncertainty and questions, Christ meets us. With the sudden slam of the door, transformation and something new begins. The service will once again pause, until we begin again at the third and final door on Saturday night.

GOOD FRIDAY MIDDAY WORSHIP - 11:30 in the Looking Within Center

EASTER VIGIL - A NEW DOOR OPENS

Saturday, April 19

IN-PERSON AT 7:30PM

Have you ever walked up to a new door, and upon walking through it, life was never the same? Maybe it was a new job, or a new school, or a new relationship. You walked up to the door with memories of hurt and failure in tow, but on the other side new life, new hope, new joy, and a new day was in store. The evening begins outside by a fire, we will light candles, and walk through the doors of the building for a night of storytelling. This Easter night we open the door that leads from darkness to light, from mourning to dancing, from death to life. The night will conclude with the first proclamation of Easter, and a giant feast that can’t be beat!
